How are Quirky Quolls’ services neurodiversity-affirming?
Neurodiversity-affirming practices recognise neurological differences as variations in how people process and interpret information, rather than as deficits that require fixing.
As a counsellor, providing neurodiversity-affirming services is a “work in progress”. I am constantly seeking feedback and learning from my clients.
Every person is different and has unique preferences, values, challenges, and goals. However, providing services that are neuro-friendly make them more accessible to everyone.
Here’s just some of the ways that I aim to make my services accessible.
Sensory Audit
I have conducted a sensory audit of the counselling space for face-to-face sessions.
Warm (adjustable) lighting is installed.
Soft furnishings give a variety of sensory experiences (e.g. fuzzy vs smooth).
Clients are encouraged to stim during sessions to help them regulate. Fidget / sensory items are provided.
Communication
My clients can choose face-to-face or online sessions (with or without the camera on).
Booking and reminder system attempts to cater for different communication needs and preferences.
E.g. reminders sent on morning of appointment using client’s preferred method of communication.
Use of larger font size, shorter sentences and dot points where possible.
Check-ins
I check in with my clients during sessions regarding their physical comfort, energy levels, and sensory and communication preferences.
Language
I use identity-first language, unless a client indicates a preference otherwise.
I use language that reflects a strengths-based approach, while acknowledging challenges and accommodations / supports available.
