Learning to be bored at the dentist

Due to genetics and a love for sweet things, I’ve needed a few fillings. So, I’ve been off to the dentists several times recently.

I don’t like going to the dentist. (I know, who does?)

The bright lights. The sound and vibration of the drill. The strong smells and tastes. You know the drill (pun intended).

As a late-identified neurodivergent woman, I have been pushing through my health anxieties for decades. I’ve tried distracting myself (hello intrusive negative thoughts) and sucking it up (hello panic). Hasn’t worked out that great for me really.

I’ve been taking inspiration lately from the younger generation that are finding the courage to speak up for themselves and advocate for what they need.

I’ve found a great dentist. I’ve discussed my neurodiversity and health anxiety with him. He talks through what is happening, so I don’t get surprises. He checks with me before using different medications / chemicals as I don’t tolerate the flavourings well.

I tried the happy gas. But I was one of the minority that didn’t like it.

So today, I took my stress putty. It was a game changer for me! I actually managed to get a bit bored and sleepy part way through my 45-minute appointment!

I told my dentist that was the greatest compliment I could give him.
